Joanie’s Blue Crab Café, Ochopee, and Alabama Jack’s, Card Sound

I took a racing road trip this weekend, down to Homestead-Miami Speedway (brought back home a 1st-Place trophy!), and stopped in at two great out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere dive bar-and-grills: Joanie’s Blue Crab Café in Ochopee and Alabama Jack’s in Card Sound. For driving across the Everglades, I find the Tamiami Trail (Highway 41) much more interesting than Alligator Alley (I-75)—always with an eye out for a skunk ape (or perhaps the even more elusive Florida panther). I didn’t see either on this trip, but I did stop at Joanie’s, just past the Ochopee Post Office, for some very tasty sautéed (not fried) gator tail nuggets and some fry bread with salsa. Later, racing co-driver Doug Davidson and I ventured down Card Sound Road (east of Florida City/Homestead and north of Key Largo) to stop in at Alabama Jack’s. Jack’s is on an old barge next to the Card Sound Bridge. It’s been there since 1947. The kitchen had just closed when we arrived, but I know from past visits that their blue crab cakes and their conch fritters are worth the out-of-the-way drive.
